Leather Care – Maintaining and Cleaning Leather Sofas

While there are many brands of leather conditioners, it is always wise for you to use a conditioner that you have had experience with in the past. You should always experiment with your leather conditioner selection by using it on a small, hidden spot, in order to determine whether or not it will adversely affect the coloring and/or quality of the leather itself.

When you are conditioning leather sofas, it is much like applying a wax treatment to a car. Here are the basic steps:

Use the leather conditioner with a clean and dry rag.
Using a circular pattern, rub the leather condition in.
Allow the conditioner to soak into the leather sofa for approximately 10 minutes.
After it has soaked in, using another dry cloth, buff and polish.
Apply this process in a little area of the leather sofa at a time and repeat.

It is important to note that most leather conditioners will not help you if you have any tears or deep staining.

Leather conditioners are primarily used to simply restore the luster of the leather to “like-new” condition.

If you do not have a leather conditioner handy, you can also use baby oil. While many discourage this technique, it is an effective substitute for a leather conditioner. The only important thing for you to pay attention to when using baby oil is that you do not use too much. Baby oil has a tendency to stay slippery for some time, even after it is buffed; so, use the minimal amount possible, and follow the same steps above to treat your leather sofa. When testing it in a small area of the sofa, make sure the slippery effect is not present. If it is, then you used too much baby oil and vice-versa.

In using these techniques above, you will be on the road to owning a leather sofa which will enjoy a long life span.

In order to preserve the life of the leather sofa, it is very important that you condition your leather sofa at least twice a year, to maintain the proper look, feel, and life of the leather.

Protecting Leather Shoes

Protecting Leather Shoes

Any man who has ever come home from work on a freezing, wintry day only to notice salt lines on his leather shoes knows how downright annoying this can be. Once you have invested in a pair of leather shoes or boots, the last thing you want is for them to be damaged by snow, puddles, and salt. Because of this, it is wise to exercise caution in the winter, and to take the correct steps to protect your leather shoes from damaging winter conditions.

Perhaps most practical way to protect your shoes in the winter is simply by covering them up with a galosh or an overshoe. This is a great solution because rather than taking the time to apply a protective spray or polish to each pair of shoes you own, you only need to purchase one pair of galoshes or overshoes. Additionally, even if you add a protective layer to your shoes, they might not be able to withstand a serious amount of snow and salt. So if you are going to be trudging back and forth to the bus stop, or you live in a seriously snowy climate, wear an overshoe. Some qualities to look for are a large, wide fit to insure that it will slip on over all your shoes, a tabbed closure (rather than laces) so that you can easily pull them on and off even when they are wet, and a reinforced toe and heel. Despite the fact that overshoes are typically large, they should not be too heavy. Look for ones made of a nice, lightweight and stretchable material.

If the amount of time you spend in the snow will be more limited, such as from your car to your house, you can instead opt for a protective polish or spray. Be careful to select the correct kind of spray depending on whether your shoes are leather, nubuck or suede. It is also best to apply these treatments right after you buy the shoe, before you ever wear them. If you have a pair of shoes that have already been stained and/or damaged, you must clean, polish, and buff the shoe before applying the sealer. Otherwise, you will simply seal in the salt and stains. However, with a new shoe, you can just remove the laces, and you are ready to apply sealer.

There are two different primary types of protective sealer you can choose from: either a beeswax sealer, or a silicone spray. My choice for my best leather shoes, such as those that I would wear to an interview or a formal party, is the beeswax. In my opinion, it is easiest to control, and you can see exactly where you have applied it. Plus, beeswax provides a very strong layer of protection. If you are a fan of efficiency, then go for the silicone spray. These are a snap to apply, and typically you can get a few applications out of one can.

It is wise to remember that not just one layer of sealant will protect your shoes for a lifetime. You should plan to apply the protective layer annually. Once a year, I recommend cleaning, polishing, and buffing your leather shoes before applying a layer of sealer. This will keep them looking new for many years.
