Fox Trotter horse trainer Erin Stevens will teach techniques for the trail and show ring in a gaited horse clinic on May 5-6 at 4 U Ranch, 319 East US Highway 136 in Lizton, near Indianapolis, IN. For information call 812-720-0356 or 812-583-4646.

The clinic is sponsored by the Indiana Fox Trotter Association and the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association. Key topics will include:

Horsemanship skills and the rider?s influence on their gaited horse.
Gaiting issues and how to improve your horse?s gaits.
Goals to successful showing.
Teaching rider and horse proper maneuvers.
Overcoming trail obstacles.
Importance of leg yields ? side passing, pivoting and two tracking.
Using correct tack for your horse for show and trail.

There will be a ?fun show? on Sunday afternoon for participants to show off their horses and apply what they?ve learned. Additionally, Beth Draper, CEMST, Certified Massage Therapist and owner of Healing Touch Animal Therapy will be on the premises Saturday, May 5th and Carol Weir, Certified ESMT and owner of Winning Hands Equine Sports Massage Therapy, Inc., will be on the premises Sunday, May 6th. Pitch-in lunch will be held on both days.

Advanced registration is required by April 30, 2012 to guarantee horse/rider spot in the clinic. Payment in full must be paid at time of registration. Non registered horse/rider teams will be accepted the day of the clinic if space allows. Fees are:

$ 100 horse and rider (MFTHBA member)

$ 125 horse and rider (non-MFTHBA member)

$ 15 per day to audit or $ 25 for both

$ 10 per day for each stall

$ 10 per day for overnight parking

English horse tack is the collective name used for the equipment that is used by a rider when riding a horse or pony. Although you may think that all horse tack is the same, there are definite differences between English tack, and Western tack. However, both serve a purpose and allow the rider to be able to control the horse with confidence.All riders should use some form of tack when riding their horses to ensure that both them and the horse are safe. The English horse tack should be chosen wisely and fit the horse well to ensure there is no discomfort. If the English tack is well fitted and comfortable for both rider and the horse, it will make for a far more enjoyable experience. Choosing the correct English horse tack may seem daunting; however, there are some basic rules to follow.The basic elements of the English horse tack are very similar to other styles such as Western tack. However, the English tack has slight design twists that make it different from other designs. The basic items that make up the English horse tack are the saddle, bridle, reins, bits, and Girth. There are three main styles of bridle, four styles of girth, and numerous different saddle designs. The English tack offers far more choice than the Western styles.Every element of the English horse tack needs to be kept in excellent condition and cleaned regularly to ensure that it lasts longer. All riders know how important, good quality English tack is for both their comfort and safety. The tack can also be very expensive, therefore, it needs to last and be great quality. Although there are visible differences between the English tack and other styles, there are also function differences as well.The English style of riding tends to focus on the precision and style of the riding abilities of the rider, therefore, the English horse tack is designed with this in mind. There are small design features incorporated within the English tack to enable the rider to be positioned differently on the horse. Using the correct tack for the purpose that the rider intends to is very important, and can ensure that they will achieve the most from their chosen sport.Although there are several different materials that the English tack can be made from, choosing more expensive leather tack will be far better quality. Leather English horse tack is durable and will be able to cope with the bad English weather conditions. However, if the rider’s budget is lower, there are some great synthetic options to choose. Synthetic saddles are also ideal for smaller children, who will find them lighter and easier to carry around.Having the right riding equipment whatever style is chosen is essential, and will guarantee that the rider can perform to their best. English horse tack is becoming more popular all over the world, and people are finding it easier to purchase. Although some riders would have been raised riding with one style of tack, changing to English tack may prove to be far more comfortable.

The Riding Series will be offered during four, two-week sessions:

I: May 28 – June 7, 2012

II: June 25 – July 5, 2012

III: July 9 – 19, 2012

IV: August 6 – 16, 2012

The cost of one session is 0. The second session (or any additional session thereafter) cost 0.

Classes Offered:

1 – BEGINNING JUMPING
This course is designed for the rider that is working toward strengthening his or her seat and position on the flat and is ready to start going over fences. The course will start with basic flat work and will introduce small individual jumps and gymnastics. Riders will be given the opportunity to ride a variety of horses and should be capable of tacking up their mount and riding at all gaits.

Class 1A: Mon & Wed, 4-6pm (mounted from 4:30-5:30pm) OR Class 1B: Tues & Thurs, 6-8pm (mounted from 6:30-7:30pm)

(The above classes are offered during sessions I, II, III, and IV)

2 – INTERMEDIATE JUMPING
This course is designed for the intermediate over fences rider that is working toward strengthening his or her seat and position on the flat as well as over fences. This course will start with basic flat work, over-fences exercises and gymnastic work progressing towards elementary courses. Riders will be given the opportunity to ride a variety of horses and should be capable of tacking up their mount, riding at all gaits and jumping crossrails to fences 2'6".

Class 2A: Mon & Wed, 5-7pm (mounted from 5:30-6:30pm) OR Class 2B: Tues & Thurs, 5-7pm (mounted from 5:30-6:30pm)

(The above classes are offered during sessions I, II, III, and IV)

3 – ADVANCED JUMPING
This course is designed for the rider with significant experience over fences. The course will work on more advanced flat work and over fences exercises as well as more accelerated courses. Riders will be given the opportunity to ride a variety of horses and should be capable of tacking up their mount, riding at all gaits and working comfortably over fences up to 3'.

Class 3A: Mon & Wed, 6-8pm (mounted from 6:30-7:30pm) OR Class 3B: Tues & Thurs, 4-6pm (mounted from 4:30-5:30pm)

Horse Camp – Summer 2012

A wonderful environment for your child to experience horsemanship. We provide hands on learning and lots of time riding. Through activities, games, crafts and teamwork, students will learn about grooming, feeding, tack, safety, care, breeds and anatomy of horses. The highlight of the week is the show where each student will demonstrate their skill.

Session 1 – June 18-22

Session 2 – August 6-10

Camp size is limited to 8 students. Ages 8-12 Hours: 10am-3pm
