Recently, the Reverend Horton Heat, aka Jim Heath, had something along the lines of what he calls an epiphany. He's a little tired of being taken so seriously-well, maybe not seriously, exactly, but you get the idea-and lately he's noticed that some of his funnier, country-tinged songs were his biggest crowd pleasers. Besides, being entertaining is what this is all about, right? So, ladies and gents, roll your smokes up in your sleeve and hold on to your cowboy hats, it's time to take a trip back to a time before slick, over-produced country became the norm-a time when outlaws wrote songs about being without a pot to piss in-or at least about psycho exboyfriends and deadbeat girlfriends that spend your paycheck faster than you can say Lone Star. Welcome to Laughin' and Cryin' with the Reverend Horton Heat a record full of country-heavy tunes about bad habits, well-meaning but clueless husbands, ever-expanding beer-guts and, well, Texas. It wouldn't be a Reverend Horton Heat record without a song or-in this case, two-about the Lone Star State. And, while Laughin' and Cryin' marks a detour from the hard driving punkabilly of the Rev's last record, 2004's Revival, this time tending toward honk, there's still some shit-kickers ["Death Metal Guys"] to let you know that Heath and crew still mean business. "I really wanted to capture the feelings of recordings of the late '50s, early '60s," Heath said of the songs on the new record. Exhibit A: Beer Holder, a honky-tonker about a guy who finds the table by his chair a bit too far of a stretch-so he opts for a new "beer holder," his growing gut. While this guy finds his solution genius, his woman thinks otherwise. "[The record is] kind of from a regular guy point of view," Heath said. "You know, I like to do stuff that's kind of tongue-in-cheek that makes fun of the good old boy thing as much as trying to glorify the country boy thing." Heath originally conceived the new record as the product of an alter ego, Harley Hog, a sort of "laughing and crying" singer. "I was trying to develop this vocal style where I was always either laughing or crying. It was really over- exaggerated," Heath said. The problem once they got in the studio, however, "we wouldn't get that far because the guys were just laughing so hard. It was really kind of ridiculous."

Charlie Daniels is partly Western and partly Southern. His signature “bull rider” hat and belt buckle, his lifestyle on Twin Pines Ranch (a boyhood dream come true), his love of horses, cowboy lore and the heroes of championship rodeo, Western movies, and Louis L’Amour novels, identify him as a Westerner. The son of a lumberjack and a Southerner by birth, his music – rock, country, bluegrass, blues, gospel — is quintessentially Southern.
It hasn’t been so much a style of music, but more the values consistently reflected in several styles that have connected Charlie Daniels with millions of fans. For decades, he has steadfastly refused to label his music as anything other than “CDB music,” music that has been popularized on a variety of radio formats. Like so many great American success stories, the Charlie Daniels saga begins in rural obscurity. Born in 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina, he was raised on a musical diet that included Pentecostal gospel, local bluegrass bands, and the rhythm & blues and country music emanating respectively from Nashville’s 50,000-watt mega broadcasters WLAC and WSM.
While enroute to California in 1959 the group paused in Texas to record “Jaguar,” an instrumental produced by the Bob Johnston, which was picked up for national distribution by Epic. The two wrote “It Hurts Me,” which became the B-side of a 1964 Presley hit. In 1969, Daniels moved to middle Tennessee to find work as a session guitarist in Nashville. Among his more notable sessions were the Bob Dylan albums of 1969-70 Nashville Skyline, New Morning, and Self Portrait. Daniels produced the Youngbloods albums of 1969-70 Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind.
Daniels broke through as a record maker, himself, with 1973’s Honey In the Rock and its hit song “Uneasy Rider.” His rebel anthems “Long Haired Country Boy” and “The South’s Gonna Do It” propelled his 1975 collection Fire On the Mountain to multi-Platinum status. Following stints with Capitol and Kama Sutra, Epic Records signed him to its rock roster in New York in 1976. The contract, reportedly worth million, was the largest ever given to a Nashville act up to that time.
In the summer of 1979 Daniels rewarded the company’s faith by delivering “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which became a Platinum single, topped both country and pop charts, won a Grammy Award, became an international phenomenon, earned three Country Music Association trophies, became a cornerstone of the Urban Cowboy movie soundtrack and propelled Daniel’s Million Mile Reflections album to Triple Platinum sales levels. The CDB was voted as the Academy of Country Music’s Touring Band of the Year Music in both 1980 and 1981. Daniels was the recipient of The ACM’s prestigious Pioneer Award in 1998, and in 1997, Daniels and long time manager, David Corlew started Blue Hat Records.
Daniels’ annual Volunteer Jam concerts, world-famous musical extravaganzas that served as a prototype for many of today’s annual daylong music marathons, always featured a variety of current stars and heritage artists and are considered by historians as his most impressive contribution to Southern music. Among the artists “Jam Daddy” has hosted at these mega musical samplers are Roy Acuff, Don Henley, Tanya Tucker, Amy Grant, Leon Russell, Billy Ray Cyrus, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, James Brown, Duane Eddy, Pat Boone, The Outlaws, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Steppenwolf, Bill Monroe, Exile, The Judds, Orleans, Willie Nelson, the Allman Brothers, Link Wray, Ted Nugent, Billy Joel, the Marshall Tucker Band, Solomon Burke, Little Richard, B. B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eugene Fodor, Woody
Herman, and Bobby Jones and the New Life Singers, to name a few.
On Saturday night, January 19th, 2008, Charlie’s life long dream became a reality. He was inducted as a full-fledged member into the Grand Ole Opry. “It is an honor that I can’t begin to articulate, there is no way I can express what it means to me”, says Daniels. “I pursued my dream in music and by the goodness of God have been able to have a wonderful career, which has spanned fifty� years”. “I have been blessed with Gold, Platinum and Multiplatinum albums, I have appeared many times on network television, even in moving pictures. I have won multiple awards from The Country Music Association, The Academy of Country Music, The Gospel Music Association and even a Grammy. I have even played on the Grand Ole Opry many times. But I was always on the outside looking in. I was always a guest, never a member. "Ain’t God good"!
In 2009, Charlie Daniels was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame along with Chet Atkins, Billy Cox, Dick Dale, Victor Feldman, Fred Foster, Paul Riser, and Toto. Dickey Betts, former guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, hosted Daniels' induction in Nashville. The CDB performed a tight performance that included "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."
That same year, Music City awarded Daniels with a star on the Walk of Fame along with other 2009 honorees, Dolly Parton, Kid Rock, Tootsie Bess, and Ernest Tubb at the official unveiling of commemorative sidewalk markers on at the Hall of Fame Park in downtown Nashville. “I used to say, ‘I’m not an outlaw, I’m an outcast,’” says the Grammy Award winning star. “When it gets right down to the nitty gritty, I’ve just tried to be who I am. I’ve never followed trends or fads. I couldn’t even if I tried. I can’t be them; I can’t be anybody but me. CDB music is purely American music with something for everyone, At least that’s what I’ve hope for in my 50+ years in music.”

Cowboy Hats are a relatively old phenomenon in the field of fashion, in fact so old, that the erstwhile “Old is Gold” did not seem to work well with them this year. Fashion Reports were long saying that the craze for wearing a western hat was, by now, all over and we must look forward to new types of headgear.
Even the Access Magazine came up with their survey on Departmental Stores in 2007 to conclude that the cowboy hats were least popular in departmental stores in terms of headgear. Just when the distributors were wondering what to do with their huge stock of cowboy hats kept up for sale, out of the clear sky the trend turned itself on its head and by the Memorial Day weekend in summer, cowboy hats were popular again. What were those factors that the contributed to the circulation of cowboy hats again? We’ll see.
First things first. Let’s look into what popularized the wearing of cowboy hats in the first place. No other headwear can have the same intensity about itself, that same style statement about one’s personality and character like a Western Hat. Want an instance of this? Look at the celebrities. Looking different is all they have to achieve each time and without a cowboy hat, they are going to miss a lot of that X-Factor. Fashion magazines, following the celebrity trend have also reflected what was ‘in’ according to them and the cowboy hat always seemed to find its own place among its pages.
Now what is so special about this summer? Surely, not every year does such a trend recur? Western headwear youth camps, festivals, rodeos and the beach, sports and amusements such as fishing, outdoor concerts are places for which the cowboy hat was best suited. That same rugged, hardy and craggy look for the individualistic, typical American guy. And as if that were not enough, look at these gals, sporting their own cute look while riding the same, old horse wearing her roll-brimmed straw hat.
While some different varieties of cowboy hats for a certain groups may exist, for each different personality that a shopper might have, retailers have come up with newer styles and fashion statements in cowboy hats.
Which styles are best ‘in’ this summer? Distressed straws with shapeable brims are going best. One of the best types of straw is Raffia as it is light-weight, flexible and durable. Distressed hats have that worn out look or the tea-stained look. One of the factors which contribute to the ‘coolness of the straw cowboy hat is the shapeable-brim. It gives celebrities that rolled-up look very easily. The hat shape is most popular in case of pinch front, but the typical Western Cattleman look is also very ‘in’ with their pinch tops. Distressed straws are the coolest, but natural straws come to be a close second.
Let us come to colored cowboy hats now. Black and white continue to be the all-time favorites of hat wearers, but there are also other wholesale color designs. In case of outfitting, varied colors tend to become a lot more popular, to the likes of pink. Toyo hats with Pinch front shapes are also very popular during outfit promotions. Look out for styles such as leather cowboy hats as well!
Cowgirl Hats, on the other hand have come up with a number of cool designs. The objective here is to flaunt that cute, adorable girlie look. Hats with rose appliqu?ould be good club-wear for gals, while they could go for fancy beaded hats which are specialties for this summer particularly. One of the chief attractions of this summer is leather cowboy hats. Leather cowboy hats can give you the perfect blending of the rugged, western country style along with the urbane and the suave. Faux leather cowboy hats and faux suede hats, sparkly hats with stars, beads or bubbles on them are quite common a style now among cheerleaders and entertainers.
If you’re still thinking whether cowboy hats will sell this season, stop thinking and look at the number of cowboy hats that are being shipped this season. We believe that there won’t be anything as cool as this headgear this season.
